Jean Henry FORTINEUX was born on 22 Sep 1708 in Otterberg, Palatinate, Germany. Died in Jul 1753 in Frederick, MD, USA. Immigrated in 1730 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA, USA. Jean Henry Fortineux (John Henry Fortney) was the progenitor of Fortney descendants who married into the Squires family of Preston County, WV. Jean Henry was born 22 Sep 1708 at Otterburg, The Palatinate (now West Germany). He came to America on the "Thistle" of Glasgow from Rotterdam last from Dover (or Cowes) clearance 19 Jun 1730 and arrived at Philadelphia, PA, 29 Aug 1730. He was 22 years old. His signature was written by the clerk, so it seems probable that Henry couldn't write. About 1735 he married Catherine Berger, a German girl. Henry and Catherine were living in Monococy, MD on 7 Jun 1738 when their daughter, Susanna Catharina Fortunee, was baptized by visiting Lutheran pastor John Casper. He was killed by a lightning strike. The MARYLAND GAZETTE presented this accounting of the story on 12 July 1753. (Spelling is as printed in the newspaper.) "One day last week, a man in Frederick County, about 4 miles from Town, whose name was Henry Footney, having just stept out of his House at the latter end of a Thunder Gust, to a gate at about 3 or 4 Yards Distance from the house, to see if the storm was all over, a Flash of lightening killed him on the spot as he was leaning on the gate. One Child outside the Gate close by him was unhurt one oth er standing at the Door, and another between him and the House, were both struck down but soon recovered, and the rafters at, one end of the House were split, and some of the Shingles turn'd the thick End upwards. There was no Mark to be discovered about his Body, only his Beard was a little singed; for he had a long beard, being one of the sect call'd Dunkers, who never shave nor clip their beards." His godfathers were Sgt. Henry Breil and Jean Louys and the godmothers: "Elizabeth Theil and the wife of Jacob Baudoin." He married Catharine Charity BERGER in 1735 in Monocacy, Montgomery, MD, USA. Catharine Charity BERGER was born about 1708. Died on 27 Apr 1794 in Frederick, MD, USA. Catherine Berger Fortney was a lady to admire. Widowed at the age of 40, she had six children, the oldest being 15 and the youngest about two. In addition she was expecting her seventh child who was born early the next spring. She must have been a capable business woman for she purchased 436 acres in 1755 and in 1761 she purchased additional land. According to the laws of the time, sons Henry and David came into possession of Deer Spring when they reached legal age. We know that Catherine was the daughter of Andreas Berger for the two of them sponsored the baptism of the son Jacob of Philip Kunz in September of 1754 where the records list her as the daughter of Andreas and the widow of Henry. Catherine Fortney died in 1794, leaving a will that indicated substantial means. She never remarried and one can only wonder about those years after her husband tragically died. They had the following children: +35 i. Susanna (Catharine) Catarina FORTNEY +36 ii. (John) Hendrick (Henry) FORTNEY +37 iii. Charity (Charlotte) FORTNEY +38 iv. David Emmet FORTNEY +39 v. Christina FORTNEY +40 vi. Daniel FORTNEY Sr. +41 vii. Peter FORTNEY FOURTH GENERATION 35. Susanna (Catharine) Catarina FORTNEY was born in Oct 1737 in Frederick, Frederick, MD, USA. (John) Hendrick (Henry) FORTNEY was born on 31 Dec 1739 in Frederick, Frederick, MD, USA. Christened on 21 Sep 1740 in Monocacy, Montgomery, MD, USA. Died after 1808. He married Anne Elizabeth HATHAWAY. He also married Anna Barbara BUCKNER between 1786/1796. Anna Barbara BUCKNER was born about 1737 in Frederick, MD, USA. Died after 8 Aug 1805 in Monongalia, (W)VA, USA. Last name might be Henry. 37. Charity (Charlotte) FORTNEY was born on 15 Oct 1741 in Frederick, Frederick, MD, USA. Died on 28 Nov 1825. Buried in Mt Zion Lutheran, Feagaville, MD, USA. She married Henry RUNNER in 1764. Henry RUNNER was born in 1738. Died on 14 Jul 1784. Given name was Gottlieb (Michael or Barnabus) Lauffer. He changed his name to Henry Runner when he immigrated to the U.S. 38. David Emmet FORTNEY was born in 1743 in Frederick, Frederick, MD, USA. Died between 1780/1787 in Frederick, Frederick, MD, USA. He married Elizabeth SCHONSIN in 1777. Elizabeth SCHONSIN, died on 7 Nov 1837. 39. Christina FORTNEY was born about 1748 in Frederick, Frederick, MD, USA. She married Jacob GALMAN. 40. Daniel FORTNEY Sr was born about 1752 in Deer Spring, Frederick, MD, USA. Died on 15 Feb 1818 in Reedsville, Preston, (W)VA, USA. Buried in Old Fortney Cemetery. Probate in Feb 1818 in Preston, W(VA), USA. From "The Fortineux Fortiney Family in America" Daniel Fortney was known as "The Pioneer." Daniel's father was struck dead by a flash of lightning outside of the family house in July 1753. Since Daniel was so young, he probably had little recollection of his father. Daniel's family belonged to a religious group called Dunkers and lived on the Monocacy River, about four miles east of Frederick. The group's name is derived from its unusual religious practice. Their custom, known as triune immersion, involved kneeling in water and being immersed three times in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. Dunkers also dressed plainly, refrained from worldly amusements, and refused to go to war. It appears that Daniel did not serve in the Revolutionary War. He was confirmed in the Frederick German Lutheran Reformed Church in 1773 along with his brother, Peter. Daniel Fortney was registered as a member of the Federalist Party in 1796. John Adams was the presendential candidate that year. Federalists favored adoption of the United States Constitution and sought a strong national government. In approximately 1771, Daniel bought land from his brother, John Henry. It is possible that he purchased the land to accommodate his new family. In early 1794, Daniel's mother, Catharine, died and Daniel and a neighbor, Francis Hoffman, were named as executors of her estate. Most of the estate was to be divided between Daniel and his sister, Charity Lauffer. In Daniel's mother's will (Catherine Berger Fortney) of 1794, she bequeathed to her grandsons, Daniel and Peter, 25 pounds "current money" when they attained the age of 21. These grandsons "are the children of my son David." Daniel's will was dated February 12, 1818. By 1797, not many family members remained in Frederick, Maryland. Brothers Peter and John Henry had gone to Virginia and Pennsylvania, respectively. A brother, David, had frozen to death at age 40. It appears that only Charity Lauffer remained. In 1795, Daniel and Barbara had their last child to be born in Maryland. On July 25, 1797, Charity and Daniel settled the division of the property lef t to them by their mother. Between late October 1797 and early December 1798, Daniel moved to Monongalia County, Virginia, present day Preston County, West Virginia. On December 12, 1798, he purchased 380 acres of land on Three Forks Creek near his brother, Peter. It is not known if his family was with him in 1798. In 1800, he sold the last land in Frederick County, Maryland. It is possible th at he had returned that year to Maryland to bring his family to Virginia. In 1800, he and Barbara's last child was born in Monongalia County, Virginia. On February 12, 1818, Daniel wrote his will saying that he was "weake of Body but of perfect mind and memery" (sic). By February 23, he had died. That February, his family made the trip to the court house in Morgantown to record Daniel's will. Since this was a long trip, they took advantage of the situation and also secured a marriage license for Daniel's youngest daughter. He married Barbary (Barbara) PICKENPAUGH in Frederick, MD, USA. Barbary (Barbara) PICKENPAUGH was born before 1758 in Frederick, Frederick , MD, USA. Died about 1829 in Preston, (W)VA, USA. Barbara Pickenpaugh - source of date of death is item in Monongalia Co., WV Court Order Book No. 10 (1828) reading: Monday, 27th July 1829, On the motion of John Fortney (David P. Morgan, Thomas S. Haymond, Richard Watts and John Shriver, Justices now sitting and composing the court) a certificate is granted him to obtain letters of administration on the personal estate of Barbara Fortney, dec'd, he having qualified and entered into bond in the penalty of 200 dollars, with Francis Billingsley his security conditioned as the law directs and on motion of the said administrator. Hamilton, Frederick Rice and Solomon Pickenpaugh, be appointed to appraise the personal estate of the said deceased, after being duly sworn for that purpose, and report to the court.
